Short version: this site is education, not medical advice. It can help you understand your options and ask better questions. It cannot tell you whether you have hearing loss, how serious it is, or which hearing aid will work for your ears. Only a qualified professional, after an evaluation, can do that.
Not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment
Everything on this site — guides, comparisons, brand pages, and the hearing check — is general information for educational purposes only. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and it is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
Always seek the advice of your physician, audiologist, or another qualified health provider with any questions you have about a medical condition, and never disregard professional medical advice or delay seeking it because of something you read here.
Reading this site, taking the hearing check, or contacting us does not create a doctor-patient, audiologist-patient, or other health-care-provider relationship. We are not your audiologist, and this site is not a clinic. See About for how this site works and what it does not claim.
The hearing check is not a hearing test
The hearing check on this site is a short self-check based on the situations you report — for example, whether people sound like they mumble, whether you ask people to repeat themselves, or whether you turn the television up. It is not a hearing test, it is not an audiogram, and it does not measure your hearing in decibels or by frequency.
Its result is a starting point for a conversation, not a diagnosis. A result that says you show few signs does not rule out hearing loss. A result that suggests a hearing aid might help does not mean an over-the-counter device is right for you. If you want to know how you actually hear, get a professional hearing evaluation.
The hearing check stores nothing and sends your answers nowhere. It asks for no name and no email, and there is no email section anywhere on the check. The result page has a print button, so a checklist can stay on your own device. See Privacy.
See a doctor first if any of these apply
Do not shop for hearing aids first if your hearing changed suddenly, changed in one ear only, or changed along with any of the following. See a doctor promptly instead:
- sudden hearing loss, in one or both ears;
- hearing loss in one ear only, or noticeably worse in one ear;
- pain in or around the ear, drainage from the ear, or a feeling of fullness that does not clear;
- dizziness or vertigo;
- ringing that started suddenly, or ringing in one ear only;
- a recent head injury, or an ear infection that has not cleared.
These can be signs of a condition that needs medical attention, not a hearing aid. If you think you have a medical emergency, call 911 in the United States or go to the nearest emergency department. Do not wait for a reply from this site.
Over-the-counter is not the same as prescription
Over-the-counter hearing aids are intended for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. They are not the same as prescription hearing aids fitted by a professional, and they are not suitable for everyone — including children, people with severe or profound loss, and people with the symptoms listed above. A professional evaluation can tell you which category you are in. This site cannot.
Individual results vary. What helps one person may not help another, even with similar symptoms, because hearing loss differs by cause, pattern, and degree, and because fit, settings, and expectations differ too.
Information changes, and brands change
Hearing-aid product lines, prices, trial terms, warranties, and support change, sometimes quickly. In 2026, for example, two brands this site once listed stopped selling in the United States, and a third replaced its product line entirely. We try to keep this site current, and we say when a page was last reviewed, but we cannot guarantee that every detail is up to date on the day you read it.
Before you buy anything, check the brand's own website for its current price, trial, warranty, and return terms. Those are the terms that count, not a summary here. If a price, trial length, or warranty on this site differs from the brand's own page, the brand's page wins.
Brands, links, and affiliate commissions
This site currently discusses three brands: MDHearing, Audien, and Jabra Enhance (M Series). Mentioning a brand is not an endorsement of every product it sells, and it is not a guarantee that a product will work for you. We do not sell hearing aids, take orders, handle payments, or handle returns.
We have not worn or tested these devices, and we do not claim otherwise. Picks are judged from published information — manufacturer specifications, published trial and warranty terms, and whether a brand is still selling and supporting what it sells.
When you click a "Check current price" button, you leave this site and go to the brand's own website. That site has its own terms, privacy policy, and customer service, and they are not ours. Read them before you buy.
No affiliate link is set up yet, so those buttons go straight to the brands' own sites and currently earn us nothing. The day a commission link goes live, this page and the Affiliate disclosure page will say so. A commission, when one exists, will not change the price you pay and will not change the order of the picks.
No warranty, and limits on liability
This site and its content are provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including that the information is complete, accurate, up to date, or suitable for your situation. We do not warrant that the site will always be available or free of errors.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the operator of this site is not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, this site or its content, or from a purchase you make from a third-party brand after clicking a link here.
That limit does not try to exclude liability where the law does not allow it to be excluded, and it does not change your rights against a brand under that brand's own terms or under consumer-protection law.
Changes to this disclaimer
We may update this disclaimer from time to time, for example when the site, its brands, or the law changes. The updated version will be posted on this page, with a new "Last updated" date. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the updated disclaimer.
